Anhydrite deposits formed in bays at the bottom of the sea more than 150 million years ago, during sedimentation in the Secondary Era (Mesozoic). Often colourless or whitish grey, this mineral made up of anhydrous calcium sulphate takes the form of a finely crystallised or granular mass. Anhydrite (which owes its name to the Greek anhydros meaning waterless) has a pure and homogeneous mineralogical composition, and changes into gypsum in the presence of water. The hundreds of hectares of current deposits and the policy of acquisition of the Knauf group give L'Anhydrite Lorraine safety in respect of the quality and quantity of supply for future generations.
